Vusumzi "Vusi" Pikoli (born 29 March in Port&#;Elizabeth) is a South African advocate and the former head of South Africa's National&#;Prosecuting&#;Authority. He is noted for instigating criminal charges against disgraced South&#;African&#;police&#;commissionerJackie&#;Selebi and ANC president Jacob&#;Zuma. In he was suspended from his duties by President Thabo&#;Mbeki, a close confidant of Selebi, and then subsequently fired by Mbeki's successor, Kgalema&#;Motlanthe, who is an ally of Zuma. As such, opposition parties and sections of the press have claimed Pikoli is the victim of two separate political conspiracies. In October Pikoli was appointed as the Western&#;Cape's first police ombudsman by Premier Helen&#;Zille, whose choice was unanimously backed by the provincial legislature's standing committee on community safety.[1]

Tell us a bit about your early years growing up in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.

VP:
I come from a religious family. My parents inculcated certain values and principles in all of us at home. These were also reinforced when I joined the Boys Scouts at Johnson Marwanqa Higher Primary School whose motto is “Be Prepared”. Which I interpreted to mean that one should be prepared for anything in life and should be able to adapt but also remain principled and positive. In when I was doing standard 6 our class was instructed to plant trees. We were not happy with this instruction because at the time we did not appreciate its significance. Our reasoning was that trees take such a long time to grow and we were completing our primary education that year. What I have since realized was that you do not always do things for your own benefit. A good act stands to live and serve others long after you are gone
