I am descended from two Esthers.
My paternal great-grandmother, Esther, was born in Russia. After being forced out of her homeland due to pogroms, she found herself in what is now Belarus. She later married Elias and they moved to Budapest, where it was safe for them, even during World War I. She raised her four children, including my grandfather, Izso. Esther lived with him and his wife, Shari, after becoming widowed.
During the Nazi occupation of Hungary, Izso died. Esther, Shari, her children, and other family members were taken to a ghetto, a brick factory outside of Budapest. They were left outdoors without food or protection from the elements and were eventually loaded into cattle cars and taken to Auschwitz. My father was separated from the women, who clung together to help Esther walk—her legs swollen from the days on the train.
The women were immediately taken to the gas chamber.
On the first day of my father’s internment, he learned that the women were slaughtered. After the war, my father found out his brother Rudy had been killed. My father visited the synagogue in Újpest years later. His entire family was on the

"Memoir and Mirrors" - is a meditation on the memories, souvenirs and materials collected by multi-generations of women.
The matriarch, Ester Markovics was born on a farm in rural Slovakia. Her daughter, Bessy Markowitz was the artists' mother.

Both Ester and Bessy were hired to assemble jewelry for a costume jewelry manufacturer. Bessy went on to work as a silk scarf painter. In time, Bessy became a painter, and a jewelry designer in her own right. Over the years, both women amassed a collection of beads, findings, art supplies, etc. Sandhi Schimmel Gold eventually inherited a massive assortment of miscellaneous items, as both her mother and grandmother found material objects to have monetary value. Each woman, in turn, had difficulty disposing of possessions. The thought of letting go causes a great deal of melancholy.

Sandhi Schimmel Gold&#;s work is a combination of techniques including Painting, Mosaic, Papier Collé and Collage. Every painting is an original that she has created. Every piece of paper is chosen purposely, hand-cut and hand-applied; a junction of paint and paper. Every work is made by recycling junk mail, postcards and other paper ephemera that may have ended up in a landfill. Every work is inspired by something in Sandhi&#;s life, a dream, an epic poem, a legend, a belief, but mostly, her desire to create a beautiful image to share.
The meaning of the name:
Sandhi Sanskrit: संधि means &#;junction&#; or “combination.&#;
Schimmel German/Dutch: means a white or grey horse, or a gray haired person.
Gold Latin: ‘aurum’ means shining dawn. ‘Golden’ means doing right, “stay gold&#; means remaining true to yourself.
Sandhi has never NOT been an artist. But, not in the prescribed way. Although she has studied, practiced, perfected, played, dabbled, experimented — all of it has been outside the “regular” art world. Her work is a combination of long held interests.
