The pain of competing in an IRONMAN triathlon with prosthetic limbs
Rajesh Durbal will compete in his fifth IRONMAN triathlon Saturday when the St. George IRONMAN begins at Sand Hollow Reservoir.
When the year-old finishes, he’ll have completed four more triathlons than he has full limbs.
Durbal was born with congenital birth defects that resulted in having both of his legs amputated, while his right arm never fully developed.
That hasn’t stopped him from doing amazing feats this past decade, most of those wearing prosthetic limbs. That’s how Durbal competes during the biking and running portions of a triathlon. However, no amount of willpower or heart will stop the pain caused by those prosthetics.
Durbal isn’t new to IRONMAN races. He became the first triple amputee to compete in the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona during the and seasons. He even ascended Mt. Kilimanjaro.
He started all these feats with a prayer.
“The Triathlon was something that I've always wanted to do, but I was always scared to,” Durbal said. “I prayed about it and I just started walking 5Ks.”

The triathlete was in Trinidad and Tobago as part of the motivational “No Excuses Tour”, a collaboration of his Live-Free Foundation, Ask Leadership Limited and the Growing Leaders Foundation. Flow, which is part of Columbus Communications Trinidad was also a sponsor of the tour. Durbal, whose parents are Trinidadian has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of Trinbagonians and he believes that his work in this country has only just begun. One of his last stops during the tour was at the Naparima Boys College in San Fernando on Tuesday May 29, where he met with secondary school children from the southland.
The excitement was at fever pitch by the time Durbal entered the packed auditorium at about pm. Thunderous applause erupted as he made his way through the crowd of students accompanied by the Naps Boys Tassa group.
