Masaccio and Masolino: St. Anne Metterza
It is a work that cannot be missing in any art history manual.
The St. Anne Metterza by Masaccio is one of the most famous images of Italian figurative art.
Scholars agree that it was realized in collaboration with Masolino di Panicale, who is supposed to have executed the figure of St. Anne.
It is indeed the presence of Mary's mother that hints at a delicate theological reflection: the line of the female genealogy of Christ.
Mary appears with a solemn contemplative pose, probably at the request of the Benedictine nuns who commissioned the work for their convent.
But it is the dialectic of gestures between the Virgin and Her Child that reveals that Mary is not only the daughter of Saint Anne, but also the daughter of her own son. A theological intuition that was already stressed by the Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri: Mary is the mother of the child she carries in her womb and the daughter of God's will in accepting it.

La Vergine è seduta su un trono con il Bambino tra le braccia. Sant&#;Anna invece è dietro di lei e poggia la mano destra sulla spalla della Vergine. Due angeli in basso agitano un turibolo mentre altri due scostano le cortine di lato e uno le solleva in alto.

Questa tavola è anche detta Sant’Anna con la Madonna, il bambino e cinque angeli.
L’opera si può considerare una Maestà in trono, come descritta in tanti dipinti religiosi del Rinascimento.
Questa Maestà rappresenta una delle molte opere che Firenze dedicò alla Verginee a sua madre. Infatti la città toscana professava una particolare venerazione per Sant’Anna. Originally painted for the Sant’Ambrogio Church in Florence, as specified in the “Lives” by Giorgio Vasari, the altarpiece was commissioned by Nofri Del Brutto Buonamici, from a family of weavers who was very devoted to the Virgin and whose coat of arms was visible before on the two sides of the panel’s lower portion.
This artwork is an evidence of the particular reverence Florentine people traditionally paid to the cult of Saint Anne: on the 26th of July in a city uprising drove out the foreign tyrant, Duke of Athens Gauthier de Brienne, thus gaining back its freedom.
