Marietta robusti tintoretto biography of george

Marietta Robusti (sometimes nicknamed Tintoretta), from a French publication.

Marietta Robusti (? - ) was a female Venetian painter of the Renaissance period. Trained by her father, Jacopo Tintoretto, she worked in his studio and gained fame for her portrait work. She was known as La Tintoretta after her father.

Robusti was invited by both Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor (–) and King King Philip II of Spain () to work at their court, but her father would not allow it. Although she painted many portraits in her day, few have been preserved and others may be wrongly attributed to other artists since only one of her paintings was signed.

She was married to Mario Augusta, a Venetian jeweler who agreed to live in the family home, because her father could not be parted from her. She was trained in music, to sing and play the lute. She died in childbirth four years after her marriage, around age

Robusti is one of very few known women artists of this period, a group that included Sofonisba Anguissola, Lucia Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, and Diana Scultori Ghisi.

For all that Marietta Robusti was the daughter of a famous father, few details of her life are certain, not even the year of her birth.

The earliest reference to her is found in Raffaelo Borghini's Il Riposo, published in The Florentine writer and art critic knew Tintoretto and his family, and in his discussion of art, artists, and art collectors, he includes a brief paragraph about the painter's daughter, Marietta, claiming that she is "known to all" as la Tintoretta.

Borghini also indicates that, at the time of his writing, Robusti is some twenty-eight years old, which would make her year of birth about

The second early source for the life of Marietta Robusti is a brief chapter (just two pages) in Carlo Ridolfi's Le Maraviglie dell'arte: overo le vite de gl'illustri

Robustti lived in Venice all her life, her artistic training consisted in serving an apprenticeship in her father’s workshop, there she probably contributed to his paintings with backgrounds and figure blocking, as it was the usual distribution of the labour in painting workshops of that time.

The only known primary source for details of Marieta Robusti’s life and career is the book Life of Tintoretto by Carlo Ridolfi, this book was first published in She is also mentioned, very briefly, in Raffaelo Borghini’s Il Riposo della Pintura e della Scultura of The two sources disagree on the year of her birth: according to Borghini it was in , and according to Carlo Ridolfi it was in
