   Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman was an English actor and director. Known for his distinctive deep, languid voice, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, performing in modern and classical theatre productions. He played the Vicomte de Valmont in the RSC stage production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in , and after the production transferred to the West End in and Broadway in , he was nominated for a Tony Award.

   Born in Australia, Mortimer Menpes settled in London in , studying at the South Kensington Schools. He also travelled through Europe, spending some time at Pont-Aven in Brittany. In he met James McNeill Whistler, and offered him the use of his large studio in which to complete his set of Venice etchings. Menpes soon afterwards abandoned his studies to work, alongside Walter Sickert, as Whistler’s studio assistant and disciple. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in and, largely as a result of his association with Whistler, was invited to show at the more avant-garde New English Art Club in In Menpes travelled to Japan, one of the first modern Western artists to do so. When he came to exhibit his Japanese paintings in London his refusal to sign himself as a pupil of Whistler caused the two artists to fall out, a situation only exacerbated by Menpes’s elopement with Whistler’s mistress. Menpes was never to be reconciled with Whistler, and was not invited to exhibit with the New English Art Club again. Nevertheless he continued to show at the Grafton Gallery in the ’s and at the Fine Art Society in the early years of

   This major exhibition pays tribute to the artistic accomplishments of Mortimer Menpes ().  The exhibition is the first retrospective of Menpes’ work and sheds new light on his artistic practice.  It includes his work in all media – paintings, prints, drawings and ceramics – and is supported by archival photographs and material. 
   
   Menpes was an Adelaide-born artist who moved to London in and forged a successful career as an artist in Britain, living there for the rest of his life.  During the s and s he travelled to Japan, India, Burma, Morocco, Cairo, Mexico and Venice, holding exhibitions upon his return to London.  During this period he also built and decorated a famous Japanese-style house in Cadogan Garden which became a hub for artistic soirées, and to which British society flocked to sit for their portraits. Menpes was a prolific painter and printmaker and this exhibition will bring together many of his finest works for Australian audiences for the first time.
