Girolamo Cardano was a celebrated Italian Renaissance mathematician, physician, astrologer, and gambler, whose writings on the use of negative numbers are the earliest known in Europe. As a physician, he gave one of the first clinical descriptions of typhoid fever. The illegitimate child of a mathematically gifted lawyer who was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci, he entered the University of Pavia in and later studied medicine at Padua. His eccentric and confrontational style earned him few friends and he had trouble finding work. Eventually, he won reputation as a physician and his services were highly valued at the courts.
Today, Cardano is mostly remembered for his achievements in algebra. He published the solutions to the cubic and quartic equations in his book Ars magna (). The solution to the cubic was communicated to him by Niccolo Tartaglia (who later claimed that Cardano had sworn not to reveal it, and became embroiled with Cardano in a decade-long fight), and the quartic was solved by Cardano's student Lodovico Ferrari. Many technical terms are named after him: the cardan jointand the cardan suspension, for instance. He was also the author of a fundamental text in the history of mathematics, the Ars Magna. His Liber de Ludo Alea, a book on probability calculus, is also deserving of special mention.
Cardano was, however, first and foremost a doctor and a natural philosopher of international fame; fame which was partly derived from his De Subtilitate, an extensive encyclopaedic work referencing both traditional knowledge and experimental research and ranging anywhere between optics, officinal plants, new instruments descriptions and zoology.
He began his medical studies in Pavia, aged nineteen, and led a fairly nomadic life afterwards; he moved between Padua and Milan, to then come back to his native Pavia to teach at the University. Girolamo Cardano was born in Pavia in from Fazio and Chiara Micheri. Chiara delivered her baby in Pavia, in the house of family friends, and not in Milan, to defuse a possible scandal concerning the illegitimate birth. Fazio would marry Chiara and recognize Girolamo only later in , just before his death. After a difficult childhood, saddened by frequent illnesses and the harsh upbringing by his overbearing father, Cardano enrolled at the University of Pavia to study medicine in against his father’s wish.
