Appartenente ad una famiglia borghese di origine milanese Gaspara Stampa trascorre, a seguito della morte del padre, la sua infanzia e adolescenza nella città di Venezia con la madre, la sorella Cassandra e il fratello Baldassarre. Nella città lagunare nonostante le ristrettezze economiche della famiglia, riesce a studiare e ad istruirsi trasformandosi con il passare degli anni in una donna colta e raffinata.

Gaspara Stampa was an Italian poet of the 16th century whose life was tragically cut short through illness. Some would suggest though that she might have died of a broken heart, having been rebuffed by the Count Collaltino di Collalto. This was, after all, the man to whom she dedicated her entire output of poetry, amounting to some poems. Besides being one of the most influential female poets of that time she was also a musician and singer, being a more than capable lute player. She had been well taught in that art by the famous French composer Tuttvale Menon.

She was born into relatively comfortable circumstances in Padua in , her father being a gold and jewellery merchant. He died though when Gaspara was only 8 years old and the family then moved to Venice where the children were well educated in literature, music, history and art. Both Gaspara and her sister Cassandra were excellent singers and the household became a magnet for the leading lights of Venetian literary and artistic circles.

Gaspara Stampa was born in Padua. By , her father, a successful artisan, had died and her mother had moved the family to Venice. By the early s, Gaspara's brother was a university student and earning praise as a poet. The family home became a salon for the Venetian literati, at which Gaspara and her sister presented musical performances. In Gaspara's brother died, but his fellow-poets continued to visit, and by the late s Gaspara was part of one or more of the Venetian groups that met in various homes to discuss and practice the arts. At one of these she met Count Collaltino de Collato; her affair with him produced the poems for which she is best known. Only three of her poems were published in Gaspara's lifetime, although many or all circulated among her literary friends and she was apparently preparing a book for publication. Soon after her death, at the urging of those friends, her sister published Stampa's Rime, containing poems, most of which are sonnets, and most of those about Collaltino.
