Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (Annonay; August 26, Balaruc-les-Bains; June 26, ) and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier (Annonay; January 6, Serrières; August 2, ) were two French brothers known for being considered the inventors of the hot air balloon.
Biography
They were the children of a paper maker, and while playing with upside-down paper bags over the fire one day, they discovered that the bags went up to the ceiling. This led them to experiment with larger bags and lighter materials. In they made tests covered with silk and linen. On December 14, , they succeeded in an open-air drop of an 18 m³ silk bag, which reached an altitude of m.
On June 4, , they held their first public demonstration; They brought up a spherical linen bag lined with paper, 11 meters in diameter, m³ and weighing about kilograms, filled with hot air. His flight covered 2 km, lasted 10 minutes and reached an estimated altitude between 1, and 2, meters.

The French inventors and industrialists Joseph Michel () and Jacques Étienne () Montgolfier were brothers who invented the hot-air balloon, an important step in the development of aeronautics.
Both Montgolfier brothers were born at Annonay, Joseph in , Étienne on Jan. 7, Their father owned a large paper mill and gave them a good education. Joseph was placed in a private school, but he left to start a chemical business by himself. Paris, with its famous scientists, attracted him, but after a short stay he was called back to Annonay to help his father run the paper mill. He promptly tried to introduce new techniques into the business, which resulted in his father's giving him funds to establish a business of his own. However, Joseph's inexperience soon led to considerable financial losses.
Étienne's youth was a more conservative one. He received training as an architect, which included some scientific education. When he was 30, his father retired and placed him at the head of the business. Étienne soon earned a name in the paper industry through his careful and profitable improvements in papermaking.

The Montgolfier brothers were Joseph-Michel Montgolfier () and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier (). The brothers invented the first practical hot air balloon and conducted the first manned ballooned flight. They were two of sixteen children born to Pierre Montgolfier and Anne Duret. Joseph was older than Jacques, and was known to be an idealist. Jacques was the presentable one with quiet, pleasing manners and a good business sense. The Montgolfier family business was paper manufacturing, which was a technology intensive industry. Jacques made several improvements to the paper manufacturing process, for which the French government granted the Montgolfier family a grant.
The idea of flight first came to Joseph, as he watched laundry drying over a hot fire. He noticed that the fire caused the laundry to float up and wondered if this same phenomenon could be used to create a flying device. Joseph set about to build a box out of very thin wood and covered the sides with a lightweight cloth.
