Asan was born in a merchant family belonging to the Ezhava community in April in Kayikkara village, Chirayinkeezhu taluk, north of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, south India. പത്രാധിപര് എന്ന നിലയിലാണ് കുമാരനാശാന് മലയാളത്തില് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു തുടങ്ങിയത്. മുതല് പതിമൂന്നു വര്ഷത്തിലേറെ അദ്ദേഹം വിവേകോദയം മാസികയുടെ പത്രാധിപരായിരുന്നു. കാലത്ത് പ്രതിഭ എന്നൊരു മാസിക പതിനൊന്ന് മാസവും പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
വിവേകോദയം തുടക്കത്തില് ദ്വൈമാസികയായിരുന്നു. എം.ഗോവിന്ദന് ആയിരുന്നു പത്രാധിപര്. കുമാരനാശാന് പത്രാധിപത്യം ഏറ്റെടുത്ത ശേഷമാണത് മാസികയാകുന്നത്. സാഹിത്യത്തിലല്ല സാമൂഹികപ്രശ്നങ്ങളിലായിരുന്നു മാസികയുടെ ഊന്നല്. എസ്.എന്.ഡി.പി.യോഗത്തിന്റെ മുഖപത്രമായി വിവേകോദയം പ്രചാരം പിടിച്ചുപറ്റി. വിവേകോദയത്തിലും പ്രതിഭയിലും മുഖപ്രസംഗമെഴുതിയിരുന്നത് കുമാരനാശാനാണ്. കുറെ മുഖപ്രസംഗങ്ങള് പുസ്തകമായി സമാഹരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഏപ്രില് പന്ത്രണ്ടിന് തിരുവനന്തപുരം കായിക്കരയില് ജനിച്ച കുമാരന് അവിടെ സര്ക്കാര് വക പള്ളിക്കൂടത്തില് പഠിക്കുകയും അവിടെത്ത െആദ്യം അധ്യാപകനുമായി. വയസ്സു തികയാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് ജോലി സ്ഥിരപ്പെട്ടില്ല. പിന്നെ ഒരു ആശാന്റെ കീഴില് പഠനം തുടര്ന്നു. അപ്പോള്ത്തന്നെ കുമാരു കവിയായി അറിയപ്പെട്ടുതുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.

ജനുവരിയിൽ ബോട്ടിൽ സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ സഹയാത്രികരെ അവസാനമായി ആശാൻ വായിച്ചുകേൾപ്പിച്ചതു ‘കരുണ’യാണ്. വർഷത്തിനിപ്പുറവും അർഥഗാംഭീര്യത്തോടെ നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നു ആശാന്റെ ജീവിതം.
കുമാരനാശാന്റെ ആദ്യകാവ്യം ‘വീണപൂവ്’ തലശ്ശേരിയിൽനിന്നുള്ള ‘മിതവാദി’ പത്രത്തിലാണ് അച്ചടിച്ചത്– വർഷം പ്രചാരം കുറഞ്ഞ പത്രമായതിനാൽ അധികമാരും അതു കണ്ടില്ല. എന്നാൽ, ‘മനോരമ’യുടെ ‘ഭാഷാപോഷിണി’യിൽ ആ കാവ്യം സി.എസ്.സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യൻ പോറ്റിയുടെ ആസ്വാദനക്കുറിപ്പോടെ പിന്നീടു പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു. കേരളവർമ വലിയകോയിത്തമ്പുരാനടക്കമുള്ള സമുന്നതരായ കവികളുടെ ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ ആ കാവ്യം എത്താൻ അതു കാരണമായി.
വീണപൂവിനു രണ്ടു പ്രാധാന്യമാണുള്ളത്. ഒന്ന്– മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യ ഖണ്ഡകാവ്യം. രണ്ടാമത്തേത്, കാവ്യരചനാ സമ്പ്രദായത്തിൽ വിപ്ലവകരമായ മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയ കൃതി. മഹാകാവ്യങ്ങൾ രചിക്കാൻ മത്സരിച്ചിരുന്ന കവികളിൽ പലരും ആ ഖണ്ഡകാവ്യത്തിന്റെ സ്വാധീനത്താൽ ഭാവഗീതരചനയിലേക്കു തിരിഞ്ഞു.
