Chang, the son of a seaman, started building his business almost five decades ago by buying a used bulk vessel and became one of Taiwan’s richest people. He was chairman of Taipei-based Evergreen Group, which owns Asia’s largest container fleet through Evergreen Marine Corp.; EVA Airways Corp., the island’s largest airline by market value; Evergreen Sky Catering Corp., an airline-catering company; and hotel chain Evergreen International Hotels.
Chang has a fortune of at least $1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. “The oceans and ships occupy very important places in my life,” Chang wrote in his autobiography, published in The tycoon called himself “a natural-born son of the ocean.”
Evergreen Marine, the company that kick-started his business empire, was established in with the used bulk vessel. It since expanded into an operator of more than ships, according to information from shipping-data provider Alphaliner.

TAIPEI (AFP) - The founder of one of the world's largest shipping companies, the billionaire Taiwanese tycoon Chang Yung-fa, has died on Wednesday (Jan 20) aged 90, his company said.
Mr Chang started Evergreen Marine Corp in with a single cargo vessel, today it has more than ships and his sprawling business empire is one of the island's leading conglomerates.
"Mr Chang Yung-fa passed away peacefully this morning The Evergreen Group staff are saddened by this news and mourn him," the company said in a statement.
It did not disclose the cause of death.
Mr Chang and his family also control EVA Air - Taiwan's second largest carrier - an international chain of hotels and a steel corporation.
He ranked 17th in the list of Taiwan's richest people with an estimated wealth of US$ billion (S$ billion) in , according to Forbes magazine.
He had pledged to donate all his assets to charities in
President Ma Ying-jeou praised Mr Chang for his "extraordinary contributions", his office said.

Chang Yung-fa (張榮發) (, Penghu, Taiwan) is the founder and Group Chairman of the Evergreen Group.
Biography
In , Chang was born in Penghu, while Taiwan was under Japanese rule. After graduating from Taipei Commercial High School at the age of 18, he went to work in the Taipei office of a Japanese shipping line.
After World War II, he joined the seagoing staff of a local shipping company as third officer. His subsequent career was spent with various local companies and he progressed through the ranks to captain.
In , Dr. Chang and some friends jointly established a shipping company and, having helped this company to develop, he decided to branch out on his own, establishing Evergreen Marine Corporation on September 1, with just one secondhand 15, ton vessel, Central Trust.
Over the next four years, Chang painstakingly built his fleet up to twelve, running them empty when necessary to convince his customers his services were both as regular as clockwork and as reliable as the sunset. Within a year, he had expanded to the Middle East. Within three, Chang was dispatching Evergreen ships to the Caribbean.
