The history of the Earth is a history of humans fighting for survival. Humans have warred against nature, against hunger, against pandemics. The battlegrounds of human conflict are vast and varied. However, perhaps the most arduous and enduring war is the one waged against a merciless, parasitic strain of humanitys own species, Homo sapiens. This devastating conflict, which has raged since time immemorial, may well continue indefinitely. Only the tactics and strategies will change with time.
In the midth century, a dark-skinned baby girl was born in a small village in West Africa. Her name was Aminata Diallo. While a fair-skinned girl in the Northern Hemisphere was growing up in the lap of maternal love and surrounded by worldly luxuries, at the same time in the Southern Hemisphere, another baby girl was growing up in simple yet tough life struggles, nurtured by the same maternal love. Her name was also Aminata Diallo. In the Bayo village of southern Mali, she would roam the forests on her fathers shoulders and play with her mothers clay toys. As she grew older, Aminata embraced th

Someone Knows My Name
It's and Aminata Diallo, now an old woman, sits down to write her life story at the request of the Abolitionists in London. Abducted from her village in West Africa at the age of eleven and marched in a coffle (a string of slaves) for three months before reaching the coast, Aminata survives the voyage to America and ends up sold to an indigo plantation owner in South Carolina. She describes herself as lucky, because compared to the tragic circumstances and end of so many other black slaves, Aminata manages to survive using her wits, her skills as a midwife, her ability to pick up new skills quickly, and her strength of character.
She witnesses many horrors and sorrows, and experiences them as well, that make her ponder the human nature and the hypocrisy of religions, even her own. Yet through it all she does not succumb to anger or hatred; she wants only to be together with her husband, Chekura, and their children, who are all taken from her.

The Book of Negroes
An unforgettable character
Abducted as a child from her village in West Africa and forced to walk for months to the sea, Aminata Diallo is sent to live as a slave in South Carolina. But years later, she forges her way to freedom, serving the British in the Revolutionary War, registering her name in the historic “Book of Negroes” and eventually travelling back to Africa.
A sweeping story that transports the reader from a tribal African village to a plantation in the southern United States, from the teeming Halifax docks to the manor houses of London, The Book of Negroes introduces one of the strongest female characters in Canadian fiction, one who cuts a swath through a world hostile to her colour and her sex.
Published around the world, the novel won numerous prizes including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and CBC Radio’s Canada Reads. The six-part television miniseries on which it was based attracted millions of viewers in Canada and the USA. The miniseries won many prizes, including eleven Canadian Screen Awards and the NAACP award for best writing in a television motion picture.
