George Washington Vanderbilt was an American capitalist, agriculturist. He was a pioneer in forestry.

George Washington Vanderbilt was the youngest son of William Henry and Maria Louisa (Kissam) Vanderbilt. He was born on November 14, , near New Dorp, Staten Island, New York.
Until the death of his widowed mother in , he lived with her in her New York home.
Education
George Washington Vanderbilt was educated mostly by private tutors, and spent much of his youth in touring the world with them.
He had studied architecture, forestry, and landscape gardening in preparation for it.
Career
Vanderbilt worked with the architect, Richard Morris Hunt, on the plans, and superintended the construction of the building, the final cost of which was reported as $3, , He spent millions more in improving the estate, which he named Biltmore. Frederick Law Olmsted was the landscape gardener.
He offered to sell the major portion of his forest land to the United States for a forest reserve, but the offer was not accepted until after his death wh

Biltmore House officially opened to family and friends on Christmas Eve, George Vanderbilt had a beautiful new family home, but as America’s most eligible bachelor of his time, no one to share it with.
That all changed on April 28, , when he proposed to Edith Stuyvesant Dresser. A family friend, Edith was 10 years younger than George and admired for her beauty and personality. She was hailed as cosmopolitan and cultured, yet humble and down to earth. The couple shared a passion for learning and travel that they enjoyed throughout their marriage.
On June 1, , George and Edith were joined as husband and wife in a private minute civil ceremony in a town hall in Paris, France. The next day, they followed French tradition with a religious ceremony at the American Church of the Holy Trinity in Paris. Close friends and family were invited to this ceremony, which was surprisingly simple and modest considering the media fanfare that surrounded the event.

I just returned from the Biltmore, Americas largest home. Built by George Vanderbilt between and , the Biltmore is a symbol of how good the rich had it during the Gilded Age. Im sure that most of the other visitors would answer very good indeed.
But how many would actually want to trade places with George? Despite his massive library, organ, and so on, I submit that any modern with a laptop and an internet connection has a vastly better book and music collection than he did. For all his riches, he didnt have air conditioning; he had to suffer through the North Carolina summers just like the poorest of us. Vanderbilt did travel the world, but without the airplane, he had to do so at a snails pace.
Perhaps most shockingly, he suffered sudden death from complications following an appendectomy at the age of (Heres the original NYT obituary). Whatever your precise story about the cause of rising lifespans, its safe to say that Georges Bane wouldnt be fatal today.
