Originally trained as a graphic designer and illustrator, her first paper artworks were born out of a desire to create self-promotional work to impress potential design clients. But by spelling her name ‘YULIA’ in strips of paper, she had unknowingly entered the world of this centuries-old paper craft and completely reinvented it: thanks to a decade of Yulia’ s paper art practice, Quilling is enjoying a modern revival.
Soon after discovering her passion and unique style, Brodskaya has swiftly earned an international reputation for her innovative paper illustrations and was named the ‘breakthrough star’ of the by Creative Review magazine. Yulia always wanted to be an artist and chose to study BA(Hons) in Graphic Design and Illustration () and then a Masters degree in Graphic Communications () at Herts and says ‘I never even considered anything different!'
Yulia credits her time at the University as being very important to her artistic development, 'Being exposed to a big variety of creative approaches and disciplines during my studies turned out to be a great thing; even though I didn't realise this at the time. That's pretty much what my new project is about - a mobile game called 'Paper Mingle' that brings the tactile hand-made feel of paper craft into a mobile app.'

When was the first time that you remember realizing that you are a creative person?
My parents sent me to an art school when I was just about 6 years old, so I was head-deep involved in creative art practices long before I gained any conscious realisations; I grew up thinking that creativity is an integral part of life, that’s how it is supposed to be.
How long have you been creating paper art? How did you get started?
I always had a special fascination for paper as a material, but I studied Graphic Design and Illustration (I was advised that it is a good reliable option to make a living in the creative industries); I never thought that paper art will become my true passion.
