The History of Nigeria Baptist Convention: The Early Years

Background to the Study

Baptist mission in Nigeria started with the appointment of Thomas Jefferson Bowen as the first Southern Baptist missionary to Nigeria in It is important to briefly give a narrative about who Thomas Jefferson Bowen was due to his pioneering role in beginning Baptist enterprise in Nigeria. He was born in Jackson county, Georgia, U.S.A on January 2, Jefferson had three siblings and lost his mother when he was young. He was named after Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding father of America, in which case he would later become the founding father of Baptist work in Nigeria.[1] Baptist presence spread all across the Country over time and as such in the , an association was set up known as the Yoruba Baptist Association  in order to coordinate the affairs of Baptist churches in Nigeria. However, in , it was changed to the Nigeria Baptist Convention  (NBC). In the year , there was disunity in the First  Baptist Church, Lagos in which members left and formed a new Baptist Church which can be considered as a native or indigenous one. Perseguição religiosa e enfermidades, principalmente malária e cólera, dificultaram a permanência do missionário no Brasil, não tendo sido somado um período maior que oito meses. Uma década depois, em meio aos desdobramentos da Guerra de Secessão, nos Estados Unidos, alguns cristãos batistas estabeleceram-se no Brasil com apoio do governo. Pouco a pouco, o Brasil retornou à agenda missionária da Convenção Batista do Sul dos Estados Unidos.

Thomas Jefferson Bowen was a Southern Baptist missionary in Nigeria. He was born in Jackson County, Georgia, and arrived in Nigeria in , the pioneer Southern Baptist missionary in the area. In he settled at Ijaye, in Yorubaland, and with the assistance of American colleagues established other stations in Ogbomosho and Abeokuta. He became a Yoruba scholar of considerable standing, publishing a dictionary and grammar of the language after his early retirement due to poor health. On his return to the United States in he promoted a colonization scheme, whereby African Americans would settle in Nigeria. The scheme gained some support, but eventually died in the U.S. House of Representatives.

INTRODUCTION
Baptist missions in Nigeria had been on the road of development since the pioneering work of Thomas Jefferson Bowen of which however keeping growing from era to era by diverse leadership who drove the vision for decades. Nigerian Baptist was born as a result of Baptist Missions and the growth gives birth to a lot of developed and highly intellectual foreigners and nationals to prolong the vision and mission of reaching the unreached with the gospel. Adedoyin documents the appointment that was made during the convention in session. A Promotion Secretary was appointed and a Home and Foreign Mission Board was inaugurated and a missionary, Rev. John Mills was the first secretary of the Mission’s Department. He was succeeded by the Rev. W. N. Claxon. After Claxon, Rev. Dr. Paul Ehbomielen, a national, took over the leadership of the department. His successor, Rev. E. A. Udoh is the incumbent director of the department. Adedoyin further writes the testimony of Cecil Roberson on the progress of the board as at that time that Home Missions Fields in the country and the Foreign Mission Fields in Sierra Leone
