Carlyle Brown is a playwright/performer, curator and artistic director of Carlyle Brown & Company based in Minneapolis. His plays have been produced at theatres across the country and internationally. His shows produced at Illusion include Finding Fish, Acting Black, A Play by Barb and Carl, History of Religion and during the Covid years, a virtual performance ofDownin Mississippi. Other Twin Cities productions include Little TommyParker’s Celebrated Colored Minstrel Show and The African Company Presents Richard III at Penumbra Theater, Beggars’ Strike at the Children’s Theater Company, the Mixed Blood production of Pure Confidence that moved to off Broadway in New York, American Family at Park Square Theater. Carlyle Brown is an African-American playwright, actor, artistic director, and teacher. He is currently based in Minneapolis, but has lived and worked around the country. Brown worked with New Dramatists in New York City, and has received commissions from a variety of places, from the Huston Grand Opera to the Children's Theatre Company to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
Brown's breakout play was The African Company Presents Richard III, a dramatized retelling of the African Grove Theatre Company--the first African-American Theatre Company in the United States--and their pursuit of Shakespeare's works, as well as speculation about the first script written by an African-American writer: the lost play The Drama of King Shotaway. Many of Brown's plays utilize this speculation and investigation of race, culture, and history. Carlyle Brown is a playwright/performer, curator and artistic director of Carlyle Brown & Company based in Minneapolis. His plays have been produced at theatres across the country and internationally. He is an alumnus of New Dramatists and a Life Time Core Writer at the Playwrights’ Center. He has received numerous commissions, fellowships and awards including Black Theatre Network’s Winona Lee Fletcher Award for outstanding achievement and artistic excellence, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Otto Rene Castillo Award for Political Theatre, a United States Artist Fellowship a William Inge Award for Distinguished Achievement in the American Theater and a Hellen Merrill Award recipient. A scholar and historian, Brown has been an artist in residence or visiting professor at several colleges and universities, and has worked as a museum exhibit writer and story consultant.
