Thomas Pollock Anshutz (October 5, – June 16, ) was an American painter and teacher. Co-founder of The Darby School and leader at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Anshutz was known for his award-winning portraiture work and working friendship with Thomas Eakins.

Thomas Anshutz was born in Newport, Kentucky in He grew up in Newport and Wheeling, West Virginia. His early art instruction took place at the National Academy of Design in the early s, where he studied under Lemuel Wilmarth. In , he moved to Philadelphia and took a class taught by Thomas Eakins at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, a class which would solidify a close relationship and influence between Eakins and Anshutz. Biography

As early as , Anshutz was using his photographs as preparatory studies for paintings. Like Thomas Eakins, his teacher and colleague at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Anshutz made photographs that served as compositional experiments or reminders of details of landscape or figures. As a painter committed to direct observation, Anshutz was intrigued by Eadweard Muybridge's sequential photographs of moving human figures and occasionally assisted him at the Academy.

Anshutz posed his models to capture body movements and gestures and provide outdoor compositional arrangements.

Introduced in the s and easy to process, cyanotype were originally used by mapmakers and scientists. In the late nineteenth century the cyanotype found renewed interest among artists and amateur photographers.

Personal life and education

Thomas Anshutz was born in Newport, Kentucky in He grew up in Newport and Wheeling, West Virginia. His early art instruction took place at the National Academy of Design in the early s, where he studied under LemuelWilmarth. In he moved to Philadelphia and took a class taught by Thomas Eakins at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, a class which would solidify a close relationship and influence between Eakins and Anshutz. In Anshutz married Effie Shriver Russell. The two spent their honeymoon in Paris, where Anshutz attended classes at Académie Julian. In they returned to Philadelphia.[1] Later in his life he proclaimed himself a socialist.[2] He retired from teaching in the fall of due to poor health and died on June 16, [1]

Artistic career

Thomas Anshutz’s contribution as an artist is often overshadowed by his legacy as one of America’s great art instructors. Indeed he was an exceptional teacher––particularly adept in identifying his student’s strengths and encouraging their individuality––but he was also a courageous artist, who used his extensive technical skill to great advantage and pushed himself to broaden his style and philosophy without regard for what was fashionable.   

 

Anshutz enrolled in PAFA in , the year it reopened after a 5-year hiatus.  He left the National Academy of Design in New York, where he had studied for two years, because of his dissatisfaction with the programmatic instruction.  The Academy offered a larger course selection and most significantly emphasized life drawing classes and courses in anatomy.  Thomas Eakins was largely responsible for this curriculum, and his influence at the Academy was profound during his tenure there.  Eakins’s intense focus on anatomical study, dissection and life drawing made the Academy unique among American art schools.
