Areas of interest
My research focuses on understanding how protein transport contributes to neuronal form and function, and more specifically how dendritic proteins are transported within neurons. Pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus have a remarkable, polarized morphology (figure 1) that underlies the neuron's ability to act as an information processor. Generally, the neuron is composed of two morphologically and biochemically distinct compartments, the axon and the dendrites. The proper polarization of membrane proteins is critical for neuronal function because molecules that comprise the pre- and post-synaptic machinery must be directed to axon and dendrites, respectively.
Furthermore, proper polarization is critical for healthy neuronal function, and disrupted neuronal polarity can cause disease. For example the mis-localization of the microtubule-associated protein, tau, and of the transmembrane protein beta-amyloid is thought to contribute to the neuronal pathology in Alzheimer's disease. Michael Silverman, MD FACEP is chair of emergency medicine at the VHC Health, formerly the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. He has authored numerous textbook chapters and original research papers and lecturerd at the American College of Emergency Physician’s annual meeting. He and his EDs have won several awards for quality and patient satisfaction. He was the director of the Alteon-MidAtlantic leadership academy and for many years, and also served as the company’s chief performance officer.
Dr. Silverman is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School () and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (), where he served as chief resident. In , following his passion for leadership development, Dr Silverman became certified in Leadership Coaching for Organization Performance through American University, and is a member of the International Coaching Federation.

Michael's first major release in the Contemporary Smooth Jazz market, he and Jeff Lorber had come up with an idea to create a new sound where both of their strengths came together.
"I wanted to do a melodic jazz record, with Jeff's signature smooth writing and production, so it was my job to contribute the melodies for all of the tunes, and find the place where they could fit with his incredible rhythmic approach to the music."
The writing team was seamless from the beginning, and is evidenced in the first single, "Human Spirit."
