Digges, a member of an ancient family in Kent, was the second son of James Digges of Barham. He was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn in and, if he received the usual education of young gentlemen of the time, may also have attended a university. His works are strongly indebted to contemporary Continental sources, and it is possible that he traveled abroad in
Digges was interested in elementary practical mathematics, especially surveying, navigation, and gunnery. His almanac and prognostication () contains much material useful to sailors. In he published an elementary surveying manual, Tectonicon. Both of these works went through many editions in the sixteenth century. In his son Thomas completed and published his more advanced practical geometry Pantometria, the first book of which was an up-to-date surveying text. The material in these works is based largely on Peter Apian and Gemma Frisius, but in many cases Digges was the first to describe the instruments and techniques in English.
Digges was a keen experimentalist who gained a reputation, while still quite young, for skill in ballistics. Although his

, a considerable mathematician in the 16th century, was descended from an ancient family, and born at Digges-court in the parish of Barham in Kent; but in what year is not known; and died about the year He was educated for some time at Oxford, where he laid a good foundation of learning. Retiring from thence, he prosecuted his studies, and became an excellent mathematician, a skilful architect, and an expert surveyor of land, &c. He composed several books: as, 1. Tectonicum: briefly shewing the exact Measuring, and speedy Reckoning of all manner of Lands, Squares, Timber, Stones, Steeples, &c; , 4to. Augmented and published again by his son Thomas Digges, in ; and also reprinted in —2. A Geometrical Practical Treatise, named Pantometria, in three books. This he left in manuscript; but after his death, his son supplied such parts of it as were obscure and imperfect, and published it in , folio; subjoining, “A Discourse Geometrical of the sive regular and Platonic bodies, containing sundry theoretical and practical propositions, arising by mutual conference of these solids, Inseription, Circumscription, and Transformation.”—3. Leonard Digges (c – c) was a well-known English mathematician and surveyor, credited with the invention of the theodolite, and a great populariser of science through his writings in English on surveying, cartography, and military engineering.
