A graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts, Mamoru Oshii directed numerous cartoon episodes in the early s, for the companies Tatsunoko Production and Studio Pierrot. Having become independent, the director signed the cartoon Beautiful Dreamer in , then L&#;Oeuf de l&#;ange in , a short film exclusively intended for video which has since become very popular in Japan.
Two years later, Mamoru Oshii turned to live action for the first time with Red Glasses , for which he crossed paths with musician Kenji Kawai , who would become his official composer.
