Who is Jaco Van Dormael?
Jaco Van Dormael is a Belgian film director, screenwriter and playwright. His complex and critically acclaimed films are especially noted for their respectful and sympathetic portrayal of people with mental and physical disabilities.
Van Dormael spent his childhood travelling around Europe, before going on to study filmmaking at the INSAS in Brussels, where he wrote and directed his first short film, Maedeli la brèche, which received the Honorary Foreign Film Award at the Student Academy Awards. Van Dormael's feature debut, Toto le héros, was an immediate hit and won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Five years later Van Dormael was among the prizes again at Cannes with Le huitieme jour, when his two leading actors, Daniel Auteuil and Pascal Duquenne, were jointly awarded the prize for Best Actor. His third feature film, Mr. Nobody, received further critical acclaim and many accolades, winning six Magritte Awards, including Best Film and Best Director.

BIOGRAPHY
After studying in Paris then Brussels (at INSAS), Jaco Van Dormael began directing several documentaries and short films in the early s. Among them, E Pericoloso Sporgersi stood out at the Clermont Ferrand Festival where he won the Grand Price. He then embarked on his first feature film Toto the hero where he already imposed a dreamlike style focused on innocence. Winner of the Camera dOr at Cannes, he also won the César for best foreign film.
Six years later, he presented Le Huitième jour at Cannes , where he evoked the touching friendship between two men, one of whom was mentally handicapped. Its two main performers, Daniel Auteuil and Pascal Duquenne, occasionally won the Best Actor Prize at Cannes while the film enjoyed great popular success in theaters.

Jaco Van Dormael was born on February 9th in Ixelles, Belgium and spent part of his childhood in Germany.
After studying film at Louis-Lumiere in Paris and INSAS in Brussels, he became a children’s theatre director and clown. He has written and directed several fictional short films and documentaries – "Mae-deli-La-Breche" (), "Stade" (), "L’imitateur" (), "Sortie de secours" (), "E pericolososporgersi" () and "De Boot" () – before going on to write and direct three feature films: "Toto the Hero" ()with Michel Bouquet which won a Camera d’or award at the Cannes Film Festival, "The Eighth Day" with Pascal Duquenne and Daniel Auteuil () which won the best actor prize (ex æquo) at Cannes, and "Mr. Nobody "() with Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, Diane Kruger and Lin Dan Pham which won a prize at the Venice Film Festival and three prizes at the Magrittes awards ceremony (best film, best director and best original screenplay), as well as the Audience Prize at the European Film Awards.
