When Priests Within the Salesian Order Based in San Francisco Were Accused of Sex Abuse, the Leaders Chose to Keep Quiet

The Salesians of St. John Bosco is a Roman Catholic order of priests and lay brothers that prides itself on being "an international organization of men dedicated full time to the service of young people." Secured behind heavy iron gates, the center of its activities for the western United States is a three-story red brick "provincial house" at Franklin St., on the same hill as the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption and around the corner from the offices of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

A block in the other direction is Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, with its nearly 1, high school students.

For decades, the Salesians have helped run parishes and schools at the city's landmark Saints Peter and Paul Church in North Beach, Corpus Christi Church in the Outer Mission, and Salesian High School in the East Bay.

Sexual abuse allegations often go unheard until the individuals abused are adults, and for good reason. They’re so often a serious violation of trust, as each of the allegations in the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal.

Because they tend to remain unreported until the individual is an adult, they tend to remain uninvestigated as well, thanks to California’s old statute of limitations laws. That can make investigating claims far more difficult. Few even made it to court, and that can spell some difficulty in trying to find out which priests have been credibly accused.

Priests Accused of Sexual Abuse

The list below includes the priests in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles who were credibly accused of sexual abuse. It has been collected from a number of different sources. Some of the priests on this list deny they were abusive to anyone, but the reality is that they still stand accused by at least one person.

If it was possible to do so, we included a summary of the allegations made against the individuals. We also tried to list out his assignments while he served the church.

Fr. Larry Lorenzoni died peacefully the night of Sept. 5, , while asleep. For the past several years he has been suffering with a weakened heart and under the care of his cardiologist. He was born May 12, in Marostica, Vicenza, Italy. He was always proud of Marostica, a historic Venetian city with its local language along with Italian.

In , in the United States, he joined the Salesians of St. John Bosco, did his undergraduate philosophical studies in New Jersey and his theological studies in California, ordained a priest June 17,  

As a Salesian priest he taught in several schools of California and ministered in several parishes. With an advanced degree in math from Notre Dame University, he lectured at Southern Illinois University , , and was Director of Documentation for Caritas Internationalis in Rome,  

His heart was always in San Francisco. Whether teaching in Illinois, assigned in Rome, or visiting in Venice, he always returned to the Bay. St. John Paul awarded him the Pro Ecclesia Cross in
