Kroeber was born on June 11, in Hoboken, New Jersey (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica ). Though born in America, his parents- Florence and Johanna Kroeber- were German immigrants, and thus his first language was German (Hymes ). Kroeber and his family spoke German at home while he learned English outside of the house, but he also began to study Greek and Latin; this early exposure to various languages sparked an interest in linguistics that would last his entire career (Steward ). His private studies growing up also provided a foundation for an interest in geography and natural history (Steward ).

At the age of 16, Kroeber was admitted into the University of Columbia, graduating in with a B.A. in English (Steward ). It was around this time where he entered graduate work in the field of anthropology, which was a rather new discipline at this time in many places, especially in the United States. Alfred Louis Kroeber earned the second PhD awarded in anthropology in North America, and is regarded as a founder of the modern discipline. He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey to well-to-do German-speaking parents. Although his family is often described as Protestant, Kroeber attended the Ethical Culture School, which though officially nonsectarian was associated with a secular humanist strand of Judaism. He studied English at Columbia College, switching to anthropology after meeting the charismatic and forceful Franz Boas. His twenty-eight-page dissertation Decorative Symbolism of the Arapaho () was an analysis of specimens he collected for the American Museum of Natural History. Kroeber spent his academic career in California, where he established the Department of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley and directed what became the Museum of Anthropology there. He retired in , but remained active in the field until his death.

Early Life and Education

Alfred Louis Kroeber was born into a family of German immigrants. At the age of 16, he enrolled in Columbia College, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in English Language in and a Master's degree in Humanities with a focus on Romantic Drama in His doctoral dissertation, completed in under the supervision of Franz Boas at Columbia University, explored the decorative symbolism of the Arapaho tribe. This dissertation marked the first doctoral degree in anthropology awarded by Columbia University.

Professional Career

Throughout most of his career, Kroeber worked in California, primarily at the University of California, Berkeley. He held positions as a professor of anthropology and director of the Museum of Anthropology, which is now named after Phoebe A. Hearst. In addition to his anthropological research, Kroeber also engaged in archaeology, conducting
