Collecting Baseline Data in Speech Therapy
Its towards the beginning of the school year for many, which means new students and goals! I like to collect baseline data when I start seeing a new student or introduce a new goal. By collecting baseline data, speech therapists can create effective treatment plans and make data-driven adjustments throughout therapy.
What is baseline data?
Baseline data refers to the initial measurements of a students performance before any intervention begins. It serves as a starting point to understand where the student’s skills are and provides a reference for measuring progress over time.
Finding baselines can be useful in writing and setting measurable goals. Knowing where the child is starting is necessary in order to write a goal and criteria to meet that goal. Your findings will dictate what percentage and cues are included.
Baseline data can also be helpful to include in progress reports. You can include the information it in a progress note to say “the child has improved from a baseline accuracy of xx% to a current accuracy of xx%.”
By understanding where a client is starting, therapists can design personalized intervention s
A Simple (and Free!) Way to Plan Speech Therapy Sessions and Collect Data
Usually, I'm over here blogging about using technology in speech therapy, digital resources for SLPs, and hacks for teletherapists. But not today. Today I'm going to throw you for a loop. I'm sharing a simple and free method I use to plan speech therapy sessions and also take data.
Confession: While my SLP work life is nearly paperless, I've never been able to switch to digital everything. I am team physical planner for life, and I also use good ol' fashioned paper and pencil to take data, too. There I said it.
I have no doubt that there are tons of fancy websites, apps, and software programs to help SLPs with the daily tasks of planning and data collection. But that route isn't for everyone, including me. In fact, I recently polled my Instagram followers and found that 61% of them plan speech therapy sessions using a paper method and 81% take data on paper. We are actually the majority after all!
Now, I'm not abandoning technology completely. I use Google Sheets to manage my SLP caseload but still take data on paper.

Collect baseline data on the expected end of year skills.
Think about the functional skills you’d like to see your students doing by the end of the year. Do this even before you begin therapy when you know the students and have it in your mind as you start working with new students. Take your best guess and come up with an activity to measure that endpoint. It can be a game, a worksheet, responses to a story,
