Allama Prabhu (Kannada: ಅಲ್ಲಮ ಪ್ರಭು) was a 12th-century mystic-saint and Vachana poet (called Vachanakara) of the Kannada language,[3] propagating the unitary consciousness of Self and Shiva.[web 1][4] Allama Prabhu is one of the celebrated poets and the patron saint[note 1] of the Lingayata[note 2] movement that reshaped medieval Karnataka society and popular Kannada literature. He is included among the "Trinity of Lingayathism", along with Basavanna, the founder of the movement, and Akka Mahadevi, the most prominent woman poet.[6]

Allama Prabhu used poetry, now part of Vachana Sahitya literature, to criticise rituals and social conventions, to break down social barriers and to emphasize moral values and devotional worship of Shiva.[

Allama Prabhu was a contemporary of Basavanna and Mahadevi in the Shiva bhakti movement of the Kannada-speaking regions in southern India. While Basavanna was considered the primary organizer of the community, Allama was in many ways thought of as the spiritual leader, the most realized of these realized poet-saints.

Many of his poems are addressed to Shiva as Guhesvara or "the Lord of Caves." A popular story is told about the life of Allama Prabhu to explain this name: Allama was said to have been a temple drummer when he fell in love with a beautiful young woman. But the woman caught fever and died. In his grief, Allama abandoned everything and began to wander. One day, he was sitting desolate in a field and noticed something strange -- the golden cupola of a buried temple. He began to dig about it until he found the doorway and managed to enter the excavated temple-cave. There he found a yogi absorbed in deep meditation. The yogi handed Allama a linga, the symbol of Shiva, and then the yogi expired. In that very instant, Allama was enlightened.

Prabhu, who is otherwise known as Allama, Allaya, Allama Prabhu or Prabhudevaru, was probably born in the very beginning of the 12th century. He is perhaps the most important leader of the Vīraśaiva (Śaivism of Karnataka) Movement along with Basaveśvara.

The exact date of his birth is neither known nor has it been ascertained by any of his biographers. Prabhu was born in Ballegavi, a village near Banavasi to Nirahankara and Sujnani Karavura (in the Shimoga district of Karnataka). Ballegavi was set in the midst of palm trees, water-pools and rice fields.

The temple of Goggeshwara or Guheshwara adorned this inspiring setting. His parents, Nirahaṅkāra and Sujñāni, were a devout couple and Goggeshwara was their family deity. Sujñāni had often visitations from God, Goggeshwara, in her dreams. Nirahaṅkāra was the head of a dance school and was well versed in three branches of music. But a secret longing was gnawing at their hearts. It was the longing for a child. In her daily prayers, Sujnani appealed to God to bless her with a child. One day she dreamt that she had been possessed by God. In the temple opposite her house the image of Shiva quickened t
