Shuli Rand on marrying a second wife: I want to be free

"I want a permit, I want to be free," said Rand.

By NOA RAHAMIM/MAARIV
The news that a haredi celebrity, who has been in a dispute with his wife for many years, had received permission from a rabbinical court to marry a second wife, sparked outrage on the internet. It is now possible to reveal that the haredi in question is Shuli Rand.
Rand, who is in a long-running dispute with his wife and the mother of his children, Michal Rand, began dating the television host and journalist Tzofit Grant in the past year.
On Thursday, Rand was interviewed by Hen Lieberman on Channel 13's "The Source," to tell his story."The court still hasn't given me permission," Rand said on the show. "No one has given me permission. Michal came and publicized it beforehand with a loud shout. She calls it bigamy and so on and so forth."
Why can a man get a permit and women can't?
"Okay, it's true that there is no situation in Judaism to let a woman, as long as she is in the definition of being married, get married. There is no such thing. On the other hand, with a man there is such a thing, if

From Lead Role to Torah Scroll

Shuli Rand, internationally acclaimed screenwriter and actor who played the lead role in the award-winning film “Ushpizin”, is a rare combination of actor, singer, writer, and Torah scholar. He’s the type that seems to feel at home only in Breslev. His charisma and magnetic eyes have drawn thousands of people closer to their roots and to the teachings of Rebbe Nachman. “Ushpizin” was a teshuva catalyst that warmed millions of hearts.

Hashem gave Shuli the privilege of sanctifying His Holy Name on a mega-proportion scale. That’s no surprise when considering Shuli’s talents, inner strength, dedication, and commitment to the way of life he chose freely for himself. We were therefore especially eager to share Shuli with our readers.

BreslevIsrael: Shuli, tell us a bit about your background.

Shuli: I grew up in a national-religious family in Bnei Brak, pretty much a typical knit-kippa kid. I learned in Or Etzion, Rav Drukman’s Yeshiva, and then went into the army where I served in Sayeret Shaked, the Southern Command Special Forces.

BreslevIsrael:

Most of you know Shuli Randor at least find his face somewhat familiar - you have surely seen him staring as Moshe Ballanga in the award-winning Israeli movie Ushpizin. Until now he was just an actor, actually a great one (he won Israel&#;s Theater Actor of the Year several times), and he has been out of the spotlight since the buzz around Ushpizin faded out (he used to live in Ramot until recently, and was very frequently called "Ballanga" because many people actually thought that was his real name). But Rand is back, this time releasing his first album, "Good Point".

Of course, this news didn't reach and probably will never reach US soil. As I noted several times, most Israeli albums never reach the US simply because the US and Israeli JM buyers like different things - in the US, Jewish Music albums are more standardized, mainly comprised of mainstream or more yeshivish-styled albums. In the other hand, the Israeli JM market is much more eclectic and there is a ton of "alternative" Jewish Music choices, like Adi Ranand Chaim David. In my period here in Israel I've come to learn that we never get to hear many Israeli hits that enjoy incredible popularity here in Israel. For in

'Why are your mercies a fist?': A look at Breslov hassidim's music scene

Contemporary Breslov Hassidism has the most creative hassidic music scene.

This is not sanctioned Breslov music, since Breslov Hassidim do not have a recognized central leadership. Rather, there are numerous Breslov factions, each with its own character and emphasis. The music, often inspired by the teachings of Rabbi Nahman of Breslov (), is produced and performed by Breslov Hassidim, but there is no official imprimatur of a hassidic master or entire community.

Examples of current musicians who identify as Breslov Hassidim and reflect this trend include Adi Ran; Shuli Rand; Yosef Karduner; Nissim Baruch Black; and Ron Aharon Caras. Several bands, including the hardcore punk band Moshiach Oi!, formed in , and the reggae band Shlepping Nachas, formed in , share some identification with Breslov. As a rule, these musicians did not grow up as Breslov Hassidim but joined the ranks of Breslov later in life.

For example, Karduner joined while in his 20s, while Ran and Rand joined during their 30s. These musicians are not necessarily part of the same stream within Breslov Hassidism. Indeed,
