Seiichi furuya biography of mahatma

In , Seiichi Furuya left Japan for Europe on board of the Trans-Siberian train. He arrived in Austria where he first settled in Vienna, before moving to Graz where he met Christine Gössler in From this day forward, he started photographing her, in the intimacy of their home in Graz but also during their travels abroad — to Germany, England, Italy…and Japan, their most distant destination. Christine studied art history and worked for the radio, making documentary programs. After the birth of their son in , she became increasingly involved in the world of theatre. As she was devoting herself to her acting lessons, she started to show signs of schizophrenia. Christine committed suicide in East Berlin in

Since Christine’s disappearance, Furuya has never stopped revisiting his archive. This initiative was presented in a series of five books entitled Mémoires, published between and In , Seiichi Furuya sorted all photos taken by Christine with a pocket camera and 35mm camera for the first time in chronological order. When processing this newfound material, he noticed that Christine took a lot of portraits of him, at about the same time that he was photographing her. “It’s Face to Fac

Since the late s the Graz-based Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya has been pursuing a visual labor of memory under the title Mémoires. In numerous artist’s books and exhibitions Furuya combines portraits of his family with pictures from their travels and places of residence, and these images are presented in ever changing constellations and contexts.

Especially the pictures from East Berlin, where Furuya lived from to , are an exceptional document, featuring a vivid interplay between the private and public, between personal vision and documentary detachment.

In a new digital projection, Furuya shows more than images in a random sequence. 35 years after reunification, Furuya&#;s images appear as casual as they are precise and contemporary.

"Memoires " takes the reader through the entire year of , in chronological order, using the photographs of Seiichi Furuya and the corresponding journal entries of his late wife Christiane. The reason for choosing is that it was in this year in which Furuya began to notice the symptoms of Christiane's depression, which would eventually lead to her suicide in Furuya felt that, with some greater distance from these events, it was important to show his photographs and Christiane's words together. Furuya's photographs tend to show his daily life in Austria, focusing on Christiane and their young son. It's now difficult to see them as anything but signals of the cruel fact that the two people were heading on different paths.
Christiane Gossler's diary entries appear in the original German and Japanese.
