Mooky cornish biography of williams

Today the small fishing port of St Ives is best known for its beaches, its vibrant art scene and its ice cream but in the 18th and 19th centuries it was something of a smuggler&#;s paradise. And as was so often the case in Cornwall it seems the whole community was in on the enterprise in one way or another. Even one of the town&#;s mayors, John Knill, who ironically was also the Collector of Customs for several years, is thought to have participated in &#;considerable smuggling activities&#;.

St Ives &#; Privateering and smuggling added to the excitements of this busy little port town which took part with enthusiasm in both of these profitable exertions . . . the prizes and their cargoes were sold cheaply to the townspeople.&#;

However, sometimes it can feel that Cornwall&#;s status as a smuggling haven has been so enthusiastically mythologised that it is hard to separate the real history from the hype. It can be difficult to find the real characters behind an oft-romanticised swashbuckling fantasy.

We’re Off and Running, Part
Varekai, Part 2 ()

A few months ago, as I was flipping through a few classic Cirque du Soleil programme books (as is my wont), I was happily caught off-guard by a brief history of the company that it had written about itself in Saltimbanco’s original European Tour programme, published sometime in Not because the historia was in English, French, and Spanish, but rather I found the wording a bit more colorful… haughty… than what you’d find from the company today. Something about its whimsical and heady nature spoke to the way Cirque du Soleil saw itself then, containing a youthful verve and arrogance that is simply no longer present. When did Cirque lose this dynamic sense of self, this liveliness, and vivacity about its past, present, and future? Unfortunately, not long after. Thereafter the speak becomes less joie de vivre and more lié aux affaires, and Cirque du Soleil turns from a rag-tag band of street performers into a bona fide corporate entity right before our very eyes. This is not a new revelation – far from it in fact – but this re-discovery struck a chord of curiosity within…

How did others see Cirque du Soleil during this period?

Daniel Hale Williams Performed the First Successful Open Heart Surgery During an Emergency Procedure

When James Cornish stumbled into the recently established Provident Hospital one summer night in , he probably wasn’t thinking about making history or being part of a seminal moment in both American medical advancement and racial politics. Instead, he was more likely concerned with the significant amount of blood he was losing from the several deep stab wounds in his chest, which clearly required emergency treatment.

Fortunately, Cornish, a young Black man, staggered into the race-inclusive Provident Hospital, the first Black-owned and operated hospital in the United States, during an evening in which its founder, a brilliant surgeon named Daniel Hale Williams, was on the premises. As Cornish’s condition worsened, Williams made the bold choice to operate directly on his heart, attempting what was at the time medically unprecedented.

Williams rose from humble beginnings to become a trailblazer

Born in Pennsylvania in , Williams began working by the time he was 10 years old, following his father’s death from tuberculosis. Williams apprenticed for a shoemaker in Maryland an
