This is the first authoritative biography of Slobodan Milosevic, currently on trial at The Hague for crimes against humanity. I have several connections to the former Yugoslavia. The first, in high school, was ideological. Yugoslavia and the non-aligned movement it helped to create seemed to offer an alterantive to the warring superpowers. Djilas, author and former vice president of the republic, was a respected intellectual and the country's experiments with worker self-management, just the very idea of such a thing, were followed with interest and not a little adolescent credulity. The second was that my younger brother, Fin Einar, married a girl whose parents had come from there. The third was that some of our relatives in Norway, including my mother, were accustomed to vacation on the Dalmatian coast. The fourth was that I befriended a woman from Sarajevo, becoming acquainted with a whole host of persons from the former Yugoslavia, many of them political refugees from Bosnia admitted under the Clinton administration.

These connections did not dispose me favorably towards Slobodan Milosevic, but I did want to know more about him and so read this and another biography of the man, both of which did nothing to moderate my initial prejudice.

This book was born out of my experiences as a correspondent in Croatia and Bosnia in the early s, first for The Independent, and later for The Times. But whichever side of the front lines I found myself on, one name was always to the fore: Slobodan Milosevic.

For many, Milosevic has now become a hate-figure, a Balkan Saddam Hussein. But it is often forgotten - not least in the Serbian capital Belgrade &#x; that all through the s, Milosevic and his Socialist party won and held power through a decade&#x;s worth of elections.

The book is my attempt to understand the man blamed by many for the collapse of Yugoslavia and its descent into four bloody wars, and the forces that shaped his life. It is the first full-length authoritative account of Milosevic&#x;s life, from his child-hood in the drab Serbian city of Pozarevac to his current incarceration in UN detention centre in The Hague. I did not set out to demonise Milosevic, but rather to unravel and illuminate both the forces that created him, and those that he and his allies unleashed in their bid to maintain power.

BRITISH journalist Adam LeBor has produced a highly readable new biography of Slobodan Milosevic, the man associated more than any other with the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the s and its descent into a series of wars and ethnic massacres of a kind not seen in Europe since Hitler (though they were not of course on the same scale).

We learn how Milosevic, a mediocre albeit ambitious provincial Communist Party official, became a ruthless warmonger, who launched and lost four wars in the space of a few years. A former bank manager, who enjoyed shopping trips to New York, he ended up as the first head of state to be charged with genocide.

A little over a decade ago he entertained a succession of British and French dignitaries at scenic Yugoslav hunting lodges, and at the Dayton, Ohio, peace talks, despite his role in ethnic atrocities that had already occurred, he was greeted as a sympathetic &#;ally&#; and a &#;peacemaker.&#; Today his home is a 9-foot by foot cell in an old Nazi jail near The Hague, where he is on trial for genocide in Bosnia and war crimes in Croatia and Kosovo.
