Manix Abrera: Rockin’ the Stars

I first met Manix Abrera in a van of all places, enroute to Quezon Province, while he was fast asleep.

We were to deliver each a lecture together with the head of the University of Santo Tomas’ Department of Literature and the Humanities Dr. Joselito “Jowie” Delos Reyes to a little over campus editors, photographers, cartoonists and writers.

I knew Manix from way back albeit not in person. My children were avid readers of his comic books and graphic novels. Having spent a considerable amount of time sitting as one of the jurors of the Manila Critics Circle for the National Book Awards, I was also aware of his winning streak.

This young man with the familiar goatie and the humblest of auras was—and still is—in fact a rockstar in the world of the visual arts. His cult following runs in the untold thousands, charmed by his daily comic strip Kikomachine which runs six days each week in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and several books and graphic novels under his name.

Abrera twice won the National Book Award for his “silent” graphic novel “14” and “News Hardcore: Hukbong Sandatahan ng Kahaggardan!”. This, I feel, is a worthwhile tribute to t

My Journey Through the Best Presidential Biographies

[Updated]

Of the sixteen presidents whose biographies I&#;ve read so far, none have offered the variety of choices of Abraham Lincoln. Of the dozen Lincoln biographies I read, two were Pulitzer Prize winners, one is the second best-read presidential biography of all time, and six held the distinction of being the definitive Lincoln biography at one time or another.

No president before Lincoln required as much of my time, either &#; it took me over 3½ months to read all twelve biographies. Together, they contained nearly 9, pages &#; almost twice as many as the president with the second-tallest stack of biographies in my collection (Thomas Jefferson with about 5, pages).

Given this enormous time commitment, it&#;s fortunate Lincoln was both a fascinating individual and a masterful politician. His life story is as interesting as anyone&#;s (president or otherwise), and he proved far more impressive than most of the first fifteen presidents.

Manix Abrera

Manuel Luis “Manix” Abrera (b. ) graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

He is a freelance cartoonist, and the creator of “Kikomachine Komix,” his long-running daily strip in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and “News Hardcore!” a weekly webcomic for GMA News Online.

Manix also published two wordless graphic novels, “12” and “14,” and is a three-time National Book Awardee.

Manix’s art and discipline is strongly influenced by his award-winning editorial cartoonist father, Jess Abrera, and his love and talent for storytelling from his mother, Prof. Bernadette Abrera, a historian and the current Dean of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy.

Manix considers himself an incessant child of the universe, always in pursuit of stories and mysteries which he immortalizes through his art.
