The son of Herman Fajans, a merchant, and Wanda Wolberg, Kasimir Fajans graduated from high school in Warsaw (), and then left Russian Poland to study at the universities of Leipzig (bachelor’s degree, ) and Heidelberg (doctorate, ). Then came a year of research at Zurich, followed by a second research year (–) in Ernest Rutherford’s laboratory at the University of Manchester. In Fajans married Salomea Kaplan, a physician. They had two sons, Edgar and Stefan.
Rutherford and his laboratory attracted some of the best researchers in radioactivity. Since the subject straddled the line between physics and chemistry, generally at least one radiochemist was to be found there. Fajans’ interest in radioactivity had been ignited in by Philipp Lenard. Who suggested that he report on the subject for his physics colloquium. Kazimierz Fajans (Kasimir Fajans in many American publications; ) was an American physical chemist of Polish origin and a pioneer in the science of radioactivity.
Education and career
He was born May 27, , in Warsaw, Poland. After he had completed a secondary school in Warsaw (), he started studying chemistry in Germany: at first at the University in Leipzig, and then in Heidelberg and Zurich. In he was awarded a PhD degree for his research into the stereoselective synthesis of chiral compounds. In he undertook a job at the laboratory of Ernest Rutherford in Manchester, where the nucleus was discovered. Next Fajans returned to Germany where he took the position of an assistant and later became the assistant professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. He researched into radioactivity. In he took over the Faculty of Physical Chemistry at Munich University, and in became the Head of the Institute of Physical Chemistry established by the Rockefeller Foundation. In he left Germany due to the escalation of Nazi persecution. He was a professor at the technical universities Karlsruhe and Munich, where he began his research in In he emigrated to the United States, where he taught at the University of Michigan and became a naturalized American.
He conducted important research on radioactivity and isotopy and developed the quantum theory of molecular electronic structure.
In he discovered the laws that regulate the displacement of the peak in radioactive transformations, at the same time as the British Frederick Soddy. These are now known as Soddy-Fajans laws.
He elaborated some rules (see Fajans Rules) referring to the chemical bond that bear his name, in addition to discovering a new atomic element, Protactinium together with his student, Oswald Helmuth Göhring.
