Eddie Kendrickss silken falsetto vocals were integral to the success of the Temptations, one of the musical groups that brought Detroits Motown label to national prominence in the s. He often sang lead vocal in the groups songs, many of which relied structurally on the contrast between his gentle, graceful high tenor and the southern-gospel growl of group-mate David Ruffin. Kendricks would have been assured of a place in posterity for his virtuoso performance on his final single with the Temptations, the breathtakingJustMy Imagination, but he went on to a successful solo career after leaving the group.
Like the other members of the Temptations, Eddie Kendricks was a native of the South. He was born in Union Springs, Alabama, on December 17, , and grew up in Birmingham. Along with his school friend, Paul Williams, he headed North in the mids to seek fame and fortune in the music business. The two men had honed their skills while singing doo-wop music in Birmingham. Eddie Kendricks () was the first lead tenor for the Temptations, one of the most popular rhythm and blues (R&B) vocal groups of the s. After lending his voice to a number of hit songs by the group, Kendricks went solo in and recorded other hits for Motown Records, including the dance floor classics "Keep On Truckin'" and "Boogie Down."
The Temptations Born December 17, , in Union Springs, Bullock County, to Johnny and Lee Bell Kendrick, Eddie James Kendrick (the "s" was added to his name later) moved with his family to Birmingham, Jefferson County; Kendrick had four siblings, a sister and three brothers. While living in the Tuxedo Junction section of Ensley, he met another young singer, Paul Williams, in their church choir. Kendrick and Williams began singing secular material around Birmingham during the mids. Their group, the Cavaliers (which included their friends Kel Osborn and Jerome Averette) moved to Cleveland in and took on manager Milton Jenkins, who brought them to Detroit. There they renamed themselves the Primes, but Osbourne's departure for a solo career in Los Angeles ended the group.

Eddie Kendricks was a founding member and lead singer of the Temptations, which became Motown's most successful male group with more than a dozen hit singles.[1]
Eddie Kendricks was born to John and Lee Bell (Harris) Kendrick in Union Springs, Alabama in [2] The family moved to Ensley in Birmingham Alabama by Eddie had one sister, Patricia, and three brothers, Charles, Robert, and Clarence.[3]
When Eddie moved to Birmingham he met Paul Williams and they became best friends. They would sing together in the church choir and from there the Temptations were formed.[4]
Paul and Eddie and other local young men would stand on the corner singing do wop. That corner is known as Tuxedo Junction.
