Scott Joplin was the pre-eminent composer of piano ragtime. In fact, one of his first and most popular pieces, the “Maple Leaf Rag,” became one of the genre’s most influential mega hits. Joplin considered the ragtime a form of classical music meant to be played in concert halls, and he did not appreciate its association with dance halls and honky-tonk bars. As a scholar writes, “Although he primarily worked in a popular idiom, Joplin strove for a classical excellence in his music and recognition as a composer of artistic merit.” Besides composing more than 40 ragtime pieces, he also created a ragtime ballet and wrote two operas. There is a good bit of scholarly disagreement as to when and where Scott Joplin was actually born. We do know that he was the second of six children born to Giles Joplin, a former slave from North Carolina, and Florence Givens, a freeborn African-American woman from Kentucky. The Scott Joplin page at tells of the production of Joplin's opera, Treemonisha, by the Houston Grand Opera, as orchestrated by Gunther Schuller. Treemonisha
In Joplin published the opera Treemonisha. The work was said to contain some of his best music. One theater agreed to produce it, but later reneged. Treemonisha was first staged in a concert performance in Atlanta, Georgia by the Afro-American Music Workshop of Morehouse College and the Atlanta Symphony under Robert Shaw, conductor. Dr. Dominique-René de Lerma recalls: &#;The Atlanta production ran for two consecutive nights to full (and mixed) houses in late January This was the original version via T.J. Anderson.&#; The choreographer and stage director was the famed African American dancer Katherine Dunham. Uzee Brown, Jr. made his operatic debut in the role of Parson Alltalk.

Pine Apple Rag is a ragtime musical arrangement for piano composed by Scott Joplin in Although not as popular as the ragtime classic, "Maple Leaf Rag", it is one of Joplin's best works, featuring some surprisingly rich melodies and some thoughtful fingering, especially during the intro.[1] It is slightly different from the other ragtime compositions as it has a slightly lower tempo and a tropical accent throughout the song. Just like other rags, it has four sections, with the notation "ABCABCD".[2]
This song is a multi-strain ragtime march with athletic bass lines and offbeat melodies. Each of the four parts features a recurring theme and a steady bass line, standard for all ragtime compositions of the time.
As ragtime declined after Joplin died in , "Pine Apple Rag" was one of the many pieces that went down, until the ragtime revival of the s bought it back to the public eye, alongside all the other Joplin rags.
Scott Joplin liked eating fruits and other nutritional foods, which could be the reason why he composed so many rags titled after healthy foods, such as "Peacherine Rag", "Sugar Cane Rag" and yours truly "Pine Apple Rag", out of many.
